I did this trip twice. First time was 1976 when Amtrak has just been created. I would have eaten Porterhouse steak followed by apple pie a la mode washed down with Schlitz. Second time was 2014 with the new microwaved food. Very disappointed! Also in 2014 the famous hall at Union Station seemed to be closed- glad it’s open again,

Absolutely - I wonder if the catering cuts are putting passengers off the long runs. Most people I meet are not going the whole way, so just the convenience factor rather than the big trip vs the plane..

Not many people at the lounge, nor in the dining car. On my trips, the were rather crowded.
It's really sad that they do no more real cooking. I remember the days back in 1992 where the chefs did load sacks of potatoes in to the dining car and the lower level was filled with busy people operating the grill for the fresh steaks.
I really would like to pay an upgrade to different menus in the different trains. Now it's all the same.
