I also travelled from Sofia to İstanbul and İstanbul to Ankara by sleeper train but tried two winters to get tickets in the Doğu Ekspresi without luck. By the way, the coaches are TVS2000, named after the manufacturer, TÜVASAŞ. I hope with the new Touristic Doğu Ekspresi on the route there are more sleeper places available.

Very difficult to find tickets, and for my trip Amber Travel did the job excellent for a small fee. Couchette/sleeper inclusive fee for less than 10£ from Ankara to Kars. You can also find tickets on this site,

The only thing to remember is to bring with you wine/beer/water and food from the shops at the railwaystation in Ankara.

The restaurant car served hot meals but the choice had become very limited by the evening prior to arrival. Locals got on at one or two stations, selling local specialities. Arrival in Kars was 3 hours late, at 02.00 hrs, much of the delay waiting not far from Kars for a westbound service on the single line. The chap mentioned in the Lonely Planet guide met me off the train with no prior arrangement, took me to my hotel and booked me on his trip to Ani later that morning. It’s well worth a visit if you have time.
